A friendly reminder as we change the time on our clocks to change your batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
The Disaster Response Team headed out at 0400 this morning from Tallahassee to Panama City to be attached to the Urban Search and Rescue Teams (USAR) from all over the country to assist while they perform their missions. Our Strike Team consists of a service from PA and the remaining is made up of a service out of Arkansas that is partly staffed by members of the Memphis Fire Department.
From EMS Chief John Hitchens:
Disaster Response Team today definitely made a difference in Panama City, FL. Responded early this morning to reports of a nursing home that had residents without power. With the shortage of fuel the facility had no more fuel for their generators. We were able to assist in evacuating 40 residents to their sister nursing facility that was fully functional. The staff was AMAZING as they never left their resident’s side while Hurricane Michael pummeled their building. Overwhelmed by the sense of humanity here among the devastation. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings in what new ways we can help the incredible people of Florida.
Members of the Star City Fire & EMS Disaster Response Team (John Hitchens, Jared Lamb, and Sam Hamilton) are currently preparing for another deployment to Pensacola, FL at the request of AMR for FEMA. We are proud to be able to send who we can to those in need so far away. Keep these guys and those affected by Hurricane Michael in your thoughts.
Members from Morgantown Fire Department Fire Prevention and Star City Volunteer Fire Department spent the morning teaching children about the importance of fire safety.

“Today we had some very special guests visit us at Storybook Daycare! First, The Morgantown Fire Department came in. They read a few books about fire safety and talked to us about what we can do to remain safe if there is a fire!
Then the Star City Fire Department brought their Fire Truck and Ambulance! Each child got a turn to sit in the drivers seat of the fire truck, We all received a tour of the ambulance and fire truck and we even got to try on their fireman hats!”

“The Star City VFD & EMS Division recently underwent licensure by the WV Office of EMS. Today, we got the results of that inspection. The Department passed with an “A” rating and all 4 EMS units and 5 Fire units also passed their inspections. This goes to show our dedication to you; the citizens, visitors, and fellow responders in Monongalia County to have ALL apparatus equipped, certified, and ready to respond to any fire or medical emergency in our area.”

Now that members of the Disaster Response Team are back and well rested we would like to take the time to thank KAMP Central Ambulance Service for the use of one of their spare units while our team was deployed. The use of this unit allowed us to maintain all of our current obligations while being able to respond to assist those affected by Hurricane Florence. THANK YOU!!!
